La Cala de Mijas may be the best-kept secret on the Costa del Sol, authentically Spanish, with every convenience of a modern coastal town.
The beach and the promenade
Playa La Cala stretches 1.5 kilometres, holds Blue Flag status and is raked clean every morning. The promenade has dozens of restaurants, beach bars (chiringuitos) and terraces with sea views. July and August are lively but never as crowded as Fuengirola or Torremolinos.
Food and drink
The local speciality is espeto: sardines grilled over an open fire, often on a sand-filled wooden rowing boat. Try them at one of the chiringuitos along the promenade, where they come straight off the grill. For tapas and a glass of wine the centre has plenty of terraces, take a stroll and pick whichever appeals.
What to do
The Saturday market (8:00–14:00) is an experience in itself, fresh fruit, olives, crafts and street music. For sport: golf at La Noria, padel in the centre, or a day of horse riding in the hills. A 15-minute drive takes you to Mijas Pueblo, the famous white mountain village with spectacular views.
Practical tips
Parking in the centre is paid during the day (zone azul, €1/hr), free at night. Aldi and Carrefour are right next to our complex, handy for groceries. The M-220 bus links La Cala with Fuengirola and Marbella; ideal if you want to travel car-free.
